This article will guide you how to correctly install VAG-COM 409.1 KKL USB cable on Windows and VCDS software.

CAUTION BEFORE READING FURTHER:

In our experience, we do not recommend using VAG-COM 409.1. Because it s functionality is very limited. In addition you ll need to pay extra 97 to upgrade free VCDS-Lite software to full version. And even if you do upgrade it can only scan vehicles made up to year 2004.

For that reason we recommend you get the complete VAG-COM 2015 cable with original, unlocked and full version of VCDS software from Ross-Tech by clicking here.  

STEP 1: Download and Install VAG-COM KKL Drivers

DO NOT connect cable to your computer yet. Only do this when you re instructed below.

Start by downloading the VAG-COM Driver Pack 1.

Here s how to install on different Windows versions

Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10:

Uncompress the file. Double-click on Install.exe to install the drivers. When complete plug in cable into any USB port on your computer and wait for automatic installation to complete.

If install is successful, move onto Step 2.

If installation fails, see below: Troubleshooting: If Drivers Failed To Install

Windows XP:

Uncompress the file. Double-click on Install.exe to install the drivers.

Plug cable into any computer s USB port.

Found New Hardware Wizard will start and it will ask you Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for the software.. Select Yes.

Select Install the software automatically.

After the installation is complete, click Finish.

Found New Hardware Wizard will start once again because there are two drivers for this cable.

Go through the same steps as explained above to install this second driver.

Troubleshooting: If Drivers Failed To Install:

Installation failed. Download here VAG-COM Driver Pack 2.

Unextract the file into any folder. Then while your cable is connected to the computer go Device Manager.

Windows Vista/7/8/10: Control Panel System Device Manager

Windows XP: Control Panel System Hardware tab Device Manager

You ll see a device similar to USB Serial Port under either Other devices or Ports COM LPT.

Right-click and choose Update Driver Software. Like this:

Then select the location where you unextracted Driver Pack 2. Let it install.

STEP 2: Discover Port Number Your VAG-COM KKL Cable is Using

Go to Control Panel.

Windows Vista/7/8: Control Panel System Device Manager

Expand Other devices or Ports COM LPT. Whichever contains USB Serial Port.

Next to USB Serial Port you ll see a number.

If the COM port number is between 1-4, then everything is fine. Move onto Step 3.

If the COM port number is above 4, then we ll have to change it so it s between 1-4. Here s how

Right-click on USB Serial Port and click on Properties as per below pic:

Then:

Click: Port Settings

Click: Advanced

For COM Port Number you MUST choose any number between 1-4.

That s it. Now let s test if everything is working. Move onto next step below

STEP 3: Test Everything is Working

Cable should be plugged into computer.

Start VCDS-Lite software.

Click Options button.

You will see Select COM Port box. Select the COM Port number as explained in Step 2.

Click the Test button.

If everything is good, it should display Interface Status: Found..

You can now connect other end of cable to car. Turn on ignition. And you re ready to start diagnosing.

If test is not successful check the following:

Other software or devices using USB ports or that same COM Port could be conflicting. You should uninstall the suspected software or device for troubleshooting this problem.

It should be noted that VAG-COM 409.1 KKL cable does not work on vehicles running on CAN-BUS System.

Cable must be plugged into the vehicle with ignition ON.

Test the cable with each COM Port from 1 to 4 in Windows Device Manager.

Make sure that the driver is installed and configured as explained in Step 1.

More Troubleshooting Tips:

Only Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda and Seat vehicles are supported. Other brands will only work for generic OBD-II functions.

If VAG-COM 409.1 KKL cable doesn t connect or if you get the error message Can t Synch Baud Rate then go to Options and set Start Baud to 9600. If 9600 doesn t work, try 4800 and 1200. Turn the vehicle s ignition OFF and back ON after each failed attempt to connect.

If you have installed VCDS software before or from another source, uninstall all versions of VCDS software right now. And install latest version of VCDS-Lite software by clicking here.

Cable should NOT be connected to your laptop yet. Only connect it when instructions say so.

Windows XP, Vista, 7:

If you bought genuine ELM327 cable from Total Car Diagnostics - then you only need to install DRIVER PACK 3. After install, go to Step 2 to test it s working ok.

If you bought ELM327 cable from elsewhere clones, eBay, other manufacturers then install all Driver Packs below, because they cover widest range of chip makers

Windows 8, 10:

If you bought genuine ELM327 cable from Total Car Diagnostics here, then you only need to install DRIVER PACK 3. Then go straight to Step 2 to test it s working ok.

   Steps to install Driver Pack 5:

Right-click on ser2pl icon has a little gear pic in it and choose Install, as per below pic:

Connect ELM327 cable to your laptop. Then

Go to: Control Panel System Device Manager Ports COM LPT

You will likely see a yellow mark next to Prolific, like this:

Right-click on it Update Driver Software

Click Browse my computer for driver software.

Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.

UNcheck Show compatible hardware.

Select: Prolific driver version 3.3.2.102

Install. That s it. The yellow triangle next to Prolific should be gone.

STEP 2: Test if ELM327 USB Cable is Installed Correctly

You can now CONNECT your ELM327 USB cable to any port on the laptop.

Ok, we re almost ready to start scanning your vehicle.

First, let s ensure that everything is working fine.

Here s how

Step 1: Access Device Manager

Windows Vista/7/8/10: Control Panel System Device Manager

Windows XP: Control Panel System Hardware tab Device Manager

Step 2: Expand Other Devices and Ports COM LPT

Notice any device with any one of the following names:

FT232R USB UART

Prolific USB-to-Serial

USB Serial Port

USB2.0-Serial

Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge

NONE of above devices should have a yellow mark next to them.

If none of the above has a yellow mark, then congratulations. You re ready to begin scanning your car s. Click here on how to connect to your car in the next 5 minutes

If any of above devices has a yellow mark, then:

Right-click on that device Uninstall

Unplug cable

Restart PC

Install DRIVER PACK 6

Double-click on InstallUSB to install

Connect cable to laptop. It should work now

If yellow mark is STILL not gone, go to Troubleshooting.

How To Scan Your Car

Step 1: Install your OBD software. Don t launch it yet.

Step 2: Connect the cable to your computer and car.

Step 3: Place the key in the ignition and turn it forward to the ON position. Position where all dashboard lights are on. It s one position before engine starts.

Step 4: Launch your OBD software. Click Connect, and it ll auto-connect to the car.

TIP: If you want maximum data reported from the car, you ll need to have vehicles engine running.

And yes, you can drive your car while diagnosing it. Just be careful. Keep eyes on the road at all times.

Troubleshooting: Solutions for connection issues

Common Solutions:

If you re unable to connect successfully to your car, then that s because of 2 reasons:

Your vehicle is not OBD2 compatible. This is reason in 99 of cases, which means you can only scan it at mechanic using their 2000 OBD1 scanners.

Random issues that can be fixed with below solutions

Here are solutions in recommended order:

First check that ELM327 is physically working not defunct. When you plug in the cable into a USB port, all the lights on ELM327 interface/device should flash. And then it ll return to 1 red light power.

       Condition of a defunct ELM327 interface: All lights will not initially flash, and only red light will be on.

Restart computer while keeping cable connected to laptop. Try again.

Plug USB into different physical port of your computer. Try again.

If all above solutions fail, then we will help you only if you are Total Car Diagnostics customer. Here s all you need to do

Connect ELM327 USB cable into laptop. Don t need to plug the other end to car

Step 1: Go to Control Panel.

Step 2: Expand Ports COM LPT and Other Devices.

Step 3: Take picture of the screen Press Print Screen key on the keyboard then paste into any graphics program. Or take shot with camera/phone.

Free Software That Will Test If ELM327 is Working with Windows

Step 1: Download, extract and install this test OBD software. Do not launch it until Step 4 below.

Step 2: Connect ELM327 USB cable to laptop and car.

Step 3: Turn on car ignition.
